Srinagar, Feb 19: Heavy snowfall has transformed the stunning valleys and mountains of Kashmir into a winter wonderland, drawing tourists from across India and the world even as extreme weather wrecks havoc on transportation networks.
Over two feet of powdery snow accumulated across the region, including tourist hotspots like Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam, after heavy precipitation started late Sunday night. All major highways connecting the Kashmir valley, including the arterial Jammu-Srinagar national highway, have been closed due to snow-triggered landslides and avalanches.
The influx of tourists keen to experience the snow-covered landscapes has led to 100% occupancy at hotels in Gulmarg, the famous ski resort that is also hosting the 4th National Khelo India Winter Games starting February 21.
“We had come here to see snow, and our dream has come true. We played with snow for two hours. I believe this is a winter wonderland, and everyone should come,” said Neeta, a tourist from Australia.
While the pleasant weather has brought cheer to the tourism industry, it has disrupted normal life across the valley. Examinations at the University of Kashmir have been postponed as the heavy snow makes mobility difficult.
Authorities have advised against traveling on the highways until weather improves and roads are cleared. They expect precipitation to continue for a few more days, prolonging difficulties in connectivity with the rest of the country.
