Srinagar, Jan 6: Following the deaths of five family members in Srinagar due to suffocation, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has issued an urgent appeal for safer heating practices during winter. DAK President Dr. MY Tak expressed deep sorrow over the incident while emphasizing the critical importance of proper safety measures.
“The loss of five family members to suffocation is tragic. While heating our homes is essential during severe winters, safety must be paramount. We strongly urge the public to use heating methods responsibly and maintain vigilant safety measures to prevent suffocation and electrical accidents,” Dr. Tak said.
Senior Executive Member Dr. Masood Rashid stressed the importance of proper knowledge about heating equipment. “Many households use various heating devices such as gas heaters, kerosene heaters, electric blankets, and blowers without understanding their associated risks. This lack of awareness can lead to disasters. Additionally, hotel owners must inform tourists about the proper use of heating appliances, particularly gas heaters and electric blankets commonly used in our region.”
DAK Vice President Dr. Arshed Trag outlined essential safety measures:
- Maintain proper ventilation, especially when using gas or kerosene heaters
- Turn off all heating devices before sleeping
- Schedule annual professional inspections of heating equipment
- Avoid overloading electrical circuits
- Install carbon monoxide detectors in homes
- Keep heating appliances away from flammable materials
- Use only certified heating devices
- Maintain appropriate room temperature
Dr. Owais H. Dar, DAK General Secretary, highlighted the importance of maintaining indoor temperatures at or above 19°C, particularly for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. “While maintaining warm temperatures is crucial, it should never compromise safety standards. Simple precautions can prevent tragic incidents during winter,” he said.
The organization called for local authorities and community leaders to launch public awareness campaigns about heating safety. Dr. Aijaz Ahmad, Joint Secretary DAK, added, “Winter brings challenges, but these should not cost lives. We must prioritize safety in our homes to protect our families.”
DAK has offered to work with relevant stakeholders to enhance public awareness and prevent future winter-related tragedies.
