Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed an improvement in the employment rate thereby causing a massive decline in the unemployment rate, the union territory has been battling with for the last many months.

As per the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) figures, the unemployment rate in December has declined to 15.0 per cent.

It is way much lower than many states including Rajasthan (27.1%), Haryana (34.1&) and Jharkhand(17.3%).  At national average the unemployment rate  7.7 per cent including 9.1% in urban and 7.1 % in rural India.

Jammu and Kashmir for the last three months has been leading in the unemployment rate in the entire country.

The CMIE records suggest that in November, the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir was recorded 21.2% against a national average of 7.1 per cent.

In October , the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir had plunged to 22.2 per cent . September recorded an unemployment rate of 21.4 per cent.

The unemployment rates are produced by CMIE using its Consumer Pyramids Household Survey machinery.

Officials cite the intensified recruitment drives and recovery of the economy after Covid lockdown as the main reason behind the improving employment rate.

“Last year we witnessed that covid affected every state of India drastically. The economy was on crutches as businesses, which had just started to recover after 2020 lockdown, suffered again heavily during lockdown 2.0. Jammu and Kashmir like any other state of India did well after unlock 2.0 as tax collection and recruitment drives intensified,” they said.

Officials said the boom in the tourism sector equally contributed to the improved employment rate last year. “The months of October, November and December witnessed a massive influx of tourists, which resulted in 100 per cent occupancy in hotels. Houseboats, hotels and travel agencies have called their staff back which they had laid-off during Covid 19 surge,” they said.

As per the Department of Labour and Employment as many as 770319 qualified youth graduates and postgraduates have registered  themselves with employment exchanges in the valley.

Pertinently SSRB as per the latest notification announced recruitment for a total of 1200 posts of sub-inspector and 462 posts as Junior Engineer in various departments.–
