Srinagar, Feb 17: A winter storm is forecast to impact Kashmir between February 18th and 20th, dumping over 7 feet of snow in parts of the region.
According to meteorologists, a strong Western Disturbance will interact with moisture streaming in from the Arabian Sea to produce an snowstorm across Jammu and Kashmir. The storm could bring up to 2-7 feet of total snow accumulation to the higher elevations of north Kashmir based on current projections. Even in the valleys and plains, heavy rain is expected to turn into snow as temperatures drop behind the system.
Central and south Kashmir are also bracing for 1-5 feet of snow, especially if rain transitions over to snowfall. The heavy, wet nature of the snow will increase the risk of roof collapses and avalanches. Downed trees and power lines are likely at lower elevations as well.
Major travel disruptions are anticipated, including along the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which is prone to landslides and shooting stones during intense storms.
