Mumbai, Jan 23: In a stunning display of bowling prowess, Umar Nazir Mir, a towering 6-foot-4 fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, dismantled Mumbai’s star-studded batting lineup during the Ranji Trophy match on January 23, 2025. Mir, who hails from Pulwama, was instrumental in dismissing key players including Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube, leading to a significant upset for the defending champions.

Mir began his spell with a bang, getting Rohit Sharma out for just 3 runs with a well-directed short-pitched delivery, caught by J&K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. This was followed by the dismissal of Rahane, who was bowled for 12, showcasing Mir’s ability to exploit the pitch conditions at the BKC Ground where the match was hosted. The onslaught continued as he sent back Dube for a duck, caught by Kanhaiya Wadhawan, tightening J&K’s grip on the game.

The 31-year-old has been a consistent performer for Jammu and Kashmir since his first-class debut in 2013, amassing 138 wickets in 57 matches. His experience and skill were evident as he not only took wickets but also kept the pressure on with his pace and bounce, making it a difficult day for Mumbai’s batsmen.

Rohit Sharma’s return to domestic cricket was anticipated with much excitement, but it ended in disappointment as he, along with his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, failed to make a significant impact, getting dismissed for 3 and 4 runs respectively. Jaiswal was trapped lbw by fellow J&K pacer Auqib Nabi, adding to Mumbai’s early woes.

The match also saw a small crowd at the venue, with many spectators from nearby offices watching the action only to disperse quickly after Sharma’s early exit, highlighting the disappointment among fans expecting a stronger performance from the India captain.

Umar Nazir Mir’s performance not only put Jammu and Kashmir in a commanding position but also marked him as a bowler to watch in the domestic circuit. His achievements in this match are a testament to his hard work and the potential to make a mark in higher echelons of the sport.
