Srinagar, Nov 11: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Inc) has expressed deep sorrow over a devastating fire incident that unfolded in the early hours of November 11, 2023, in Dal Lake.
The tragic incident resulted in the complete destruction of five heritage houseboats, collectively valued at crores of rupees, marking a significant loss to the cultural and historical legacy of the houseboat community.
Javid Ahmad Tenga, President of KCCI, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and emphasized the need for prompt action.
He urged and expects the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, to swiftly assess the extent of the loss and provide necessary moral and financial compensation to the victims. Tenga emphasized the urgency of rehabilitating the affected families on a war footing basis.
In a statement, President Tenga said, “This unfortunate incident has not only taken a toll on the heritage of our houseboats but has also shattered the lives of those directly affected. We trust that the administration, under the leadership of Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, will extend its full support to help these families rebuild their lives.”
The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry stands in solidarity with the affected families during this challenging time. The organization has appealed to the Government of Jammu & Kashmir to expedite the process of granting permission for the reconstruction of the gutted houseboats. Additionally, KCCI has requested the immediate supply of the required quantity of timber, of suitable quality, to aid in the reconstruction efforts.
The tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of the historic structures on Dal Lake and the pressing need for comprehensive measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
