SRINAGAR, Dec 28: The Directorate of Sericulture Development Department hosted a comprehensive review meeting today, focusing on the department’s achievements and ongoing initiatives across Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, chaired by Director Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, IAS, brought together senior officials to evaluate progress in cocoon production and mulberry plantation programs.
In his assessment of the 2024-25 spring and autumn cocoon crops, Bhat emphasized the critical importance of precise data collection for future planning. The review covered district-wise achievements in field plantations under various schemes, including Silk Samagra-2, with particular attention to survival rates of mulberry plantations throughout the Union Territory.
“Quality silkworm seed production is crucial for meeting our farmers’ growing demands,” Bhat stated during discussions on seed production targets for 2024-25. The meeting also examined the physical and financial status of projects under multiple funding streams, including Capex, HADP, and NABARD.
The Director commended the department’s achievements while calling for innovative approaches to address ongoing challenges. He stressed the government’s dedication to developing sericulture as a sustainable economic activity in the region.
Senior officials attending the meeting included Additional Directors from both Jammu and Kashmir divisions, Project Executive Officers, District Sericulture Officers, Seed Managers, and representatives from various technical and administrative departments.
The meeting concluded with specific directives aimed at strengthening J&K’s position in India’s silk industry through improved farmer engagement and sustainable practices.
