Kupwara, Apr 16: All government and private schools up to the 8th standard in Kupwara district will remain closed today due to heavy rainfall and avalanche warnings issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA).
The decision to suspend classes was taken by the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students. Incessant rains have been lashing the region over the past few days, increasing the risk of avalanches and flash floods in several areas.
“Keeping in mind the safety of our children, I have directed all educational institutions up to the 8th standard to remain closed today,” said A.M. Dar, the Chief Education Officer of Kupwara. “The heavy downpour and avalanche warnings from JKDMA left us with no choice but to suspend school activities.”
The JKDMA had issued a high danger avalanche warning for higher reaches and a medium danger warning for lower areas of Kupwara district on Monday evening after fresh snowfall in the region.
The meteorological department has forecast a further dip in temperatures along with intermittent rain and snow over the next 24 hours in Kupwara and other parts of the Kashmir valley.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas until the weather improves.
