Srinagar, July 16: In a striking move, the Leaders of the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have jointly written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pressing for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The letter, seen as a firm call for political course correction, underscores the urgency of reinstating J&K’s special status to address long-standing administrative and democratic concerns.
As per the letter, the current arrangement—where Jammu and Kashmir functions as two separate Union Territories—has significantly curtailed the region’s autonomy and complicated governance. The opposition leaders argue that this has created barriers to effective political representation and socio-economic development in the region.

The letter states, “The abrogation of Article 370, followed by the bifurcation of the erstwhile state, has led to administrative inefficiencies and denial of the region’s democratic rights. Restoration of statehood is essential to ensure political empowerment and sustainable peace.”

Highlighting the broader impact, the letter adds that reinstating J&K’s statehood would revitalize democratic processes, enable better governance, and foster economic growth in the region, which has seen years of unrest and uncertainty.

This development comes amid increasing calls from multiple political parties and civil society groups demanding that the government reconsider its position on Jammu and Kashmir. Political analysts suggest that the opposition’s united front puts pressure on the government to initiate dialogue and possibly prepare for elections in the region.
So far, there has been no official response from the Prime Minister’s office regarding the letter. However, the move by the opposition could reignite parliamentary debates on one of India’s most sensitive issues.
