Srinagar, Mar 29: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah took to Twitter today to express his condolences after another deadly accident on the highly trafficked Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
“What a terrible tragedy as our highway claims more precious lives,” Abdullah wrote, referring to the multi-vehicle collision that reportedly claimed at least 10 lives and left several others injured.
The highway serves as the vital road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, with thousands relying on it for transport and goods daily. However, the two-lane road’s inadequate infrastructure and high traffic volume have made it notoriously dangerous.
“We eagerly await the day when the promised 4 lane highway is completed & people are able to undertake this journey with the assurance of greater safety,” Abdullah continued, alluding to longstanding plans to expand and upgrade the highway.
The project, which has faced repeated delays and cost overruns, has been a source of immense frustration for locals and political leaders alike. With the next phase still years away from completion, tragic accidents like today’s are likely to persist.
“May the souls of the deceased rest in peace,” Abdullah solemnly concluded, once again highlighting the human toll of the infrastructure deficiencies.
