Srinagar, Aug 27: Omar Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and Vice President of the National Conference (NC), has reversed his earlier decision not to contest assembly elections while J&K remains a Union Territory.
The NC’s second list of candidates reveals that Abdullah will be running from the Ganderbal constituency.
This announcement marks a significant shift from Abdullah’s previous stance, where he had vowed to abstain from electoral politics until J&K’s statehood was restored. The decision comes in the wake of a challenging year for Abdullah, who faced a defeat in the Baramulla Parliamentary seat to jailed politician Er Rashid during the recent Parliamentary polls.
The NC’s second list of candidates also includes several other prominent names:
- Mian Mehar Ali, son of influential Gujjar leader and MP Mian Altaf, will contest from Kangan.
- Senior leader Ali Muhammad Sagar is set to run from Khanyar.
- Mubarak Gul will contest from Eidgah.
- Salman Sagar is the party’s choice for Hazratbal.
- Shameema Firdous will represent the party in Habba Kadal.
- Mushtaq Guroo is slated to contest from Chanapora.
- Tanvir Sadiq will run from Zadibal.
This latest development in J&K’s political landscape is likely to reshape the dynamics of the upcoming assembly elections, with Omar Abdullah’s participation potentially energizing the NC’s campaign. As the region continues to navigate its unique political circumstances, all eyes will be on how this decision impacts voter sentiment and the overall electoral outcome.
