Kulgam, June 14 (KNT): During a direct engagement with farmers in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha clarified his administrative limitations, stating that departments like power, water, agriculture, and roads are under the jurisdiction of the government, not the LG’s office.
The remarks came as farmers urged the administration to include horticulture under the Crop Insurance Scheme, citing increasing crop losses due to erratic weather conditions.
“You asked, ‘LG Sahab, give us something.’ The only thing I can directly give you is the police,” Sinha said, lightheartedly addressing the gathering. “Roads, electricity, irrigation, and agriculture — all are with the government. But I support your demands and have no objection if they are accepted.”
Sinha’s comments clarified the division of administrative powers in Jammu and Kashmir, while reflecting his support for agrarian concerns, even if implementation falls outside his domain.
Farmers in the region, especially those reliant on apple orchards and other horticultural produce, are increasingly demanding government-backed crop insurance, water supply for irrigation, and better rural infrastructure. Many in attendance appreciated the LG’s honest approach and openness to amplify their voice within the larger governance framework.
The interaction is being seen as a significant moment in the ongoing conversation around agricultural reforms, farmer welfare, and climate resilience in Kashmir’s rural belt.
