Srinagar: The Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) has strongly opposed the government’s decision to install smart water meters in commercial establishments starting this year, calling for immediate intervention from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to halt this initiative.
The announcement has sparked considerable concern among local business owners who are already struggling with numerous economic difficulties.

In a statement delivered by Aijaz Shahdhar, President of the KTA, he highlighted the adverse effects this measure could have on the local economy. “The installation of smart water meters in Srinagar district is set to begin this year, with the initial phase targeting commercial establishments. This move occurs at a time when businesses are facing significant financial challenges, making it crucial for the government to reassess the feasibility of this plan,” said Shahdhar.

Shahdhar expressed alarm that the introduction of smart water meters could impose an additional financial burden on businesses that are already operating under strained economic conditions.
“Our businesses are still recovering from the impacts of previous regulations and economic downturns. Implementing smart water meters could exacerbate the financial strain on our commercial sector. We urge CM Omar Abdullah to intervene and reconsider this directive before it negatively impacts our vibrant business community,” he asserted.
