Srinagar, Aug 1: In response to an alarming increase in suicide cases, particularly those involving individuals jumping into water bodies, the Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) has called on the government to accelerate the process of fencing all bridges in Srinagar.
KTA President Aijaz Shahdar expressed support for the recent decision by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Srinagar to order the fencing of several key bridges in the city. The bridges slated for fencing include Habba Kadal, Nawa Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Gow Kadal, Safakadal, and Noor Jahan Bridge in Qamarwari and other bridges across Srinagar.
“We welcome the DC Srinagar’s order to fence these crucial bridges,” Shahdar stated. “This action is a step in the right direction to address the growing concern of suicides in our region.”
The DC of Srinagar has set a deadline of September 10, 2024, to complete the fencing works. In a statement, the DC emphasized the urgency of the project, saying, “Fencing works to be completed by September 10, 2024, to save precious human lives.”
“KTA firmly believes that the fencing of bridges is a crucial step towards safeguarding precious lives in our community. While we commend the authorities for initiating this important project, we also recognize that physical barriers alone are not enough. We urge the government to implement a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention, including improved mental health services, community outreach programs, and public awareness campaigns.”
“Each life lost is a tragedy that affects us all, and it’s our collective responsibility to create a supportive environment where people can find hope and help in their darkest moments,” Shahdhar said.
He said that KTA stands ready to collaborate with local authorities and mental health professionals to develop and implement additional strategies that address the root causes of suicide and promote overall well-being in Kashmir.”
