Srinagar, Dec 27: The Kashmir Valley continues to grapple with severe cold wave conditions and persistent fog on Wednesday. According to the meteorological department official, Srinagar witnessed a low temperature of minus 2.6°C, slightly higher than the previous night but still 0.5°C below the seasonal norm for this time of the year.

Foggy conditions persisted across most parts of the Valley, including the summer capital, causing reduced visibility and inconvenience for commuters. Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 3.2°C, 0.9°C below normal. Pahalgam, the renowned resort in south Kashmir, reported a low of minus 4.6°C, slightly above normal.

Kupwara in north Kashmir experienced a chilling low of minus 4.2°C, 1.7°C below the seasonal norm. Meanwhile, Gulmarg, the famed skiing resort, recorded a low of minus 2.8°C, 3.4°C above normal.

Jammu, the winter capital, registered a minimum of 7.6°C, slightly above normal, while Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah reported varying low temperatures.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period set to conclude on January 30. Following this, ‘Chillai-Khurd’ and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ will extend the winter conditions until early March.

The weather forecast predicts generally cloudy conditions with the possibility of light snow in isolated higher reaches over the next 24 hours. From January 1-2, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with a chance of light rain at isolated places. Subsequently, generally cloudy weather with light rain or snow at scattered places is forecasted for January 3-4. The meteorological official anticipates generally dry weather with moderate to dense fog in certain areas until December 31.
