JKHARA Advocates for Cargo Train Service to Kashmir in Meeting with MoS Railways

Ravneet Singh Bittu assures Babar Chowdhary of resolving the issue of swapping trains at Katra

New Delhi, Jan 15: A delegation from the Jammu and Kashmir Hotels and Restaurants Association (JKHARA), led by President Babar Chowdhary, met with Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu in New Delhi, to address critical railway-related issues that impact the economy and connectivity of Kashmir region. 

The meeting which lasted over 1 hour took place with the presence of various department heads of the railways, engineers, and top railway officials, as well as Senior Vice President of JKHARA, Dr Lateef Ahmad, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance railway services.

According to the statement, during the meeting, President Babar Chowdhary expressed gratitude to the Railway Ministry for the ongoing efforts to connect Kashmir through the railway link. He emphasised the need for the immediate commencement of cargo train services between Delhi and Srinagar, which he noted would significantly benefit the local economy and contribute to the welfare of the common people.
Minister of State Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu assured the delegation that several cargo trains are in the manufacturing stage and, upon completion, will be operational along the tracks. Babar Chowdhary advocated for a cargo train equipped with 3 to 4 compartments providing refrigerated facilities to support the transport of perishable goods. The Minister acknowledged this proposal, noting that the railway line from Katra to Srinagar is designed in accordance with European standards, ensuring operational reliability during fog and snowfall.
The delegation also raised concerns regarding the swapping of trains at Katra station, where the Minister explained there are technical challenges due to the differences in track infrastructure. However, he assured that efforts would be made to minimize waiting times between train transfers.
Minister Bittu committed to visiting Kashmir in February for a detailed discussion with stakeholders, aiming to address and resolve ongoing railway service challenges. The Minister expressed enthusiasm for the advancements in railway technology and infrastructure that could significantly enhance passenger and freight services in the region.
The discussions underscored the importance of improved logistics for transporting goods such as cement and coal, which are crucial for economic development in Jammu and Kashmir. As the railway services evolve, the JKHARA is hopeful for continued governmental support and collaboration to promote regional interests.
