New Delhi, Feb 27 (KNC): Signalling a strategic recalibration of Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism policy, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday said the Union Territory is focusing on attracting high-value domestic travellers rather than concentrating on increasing foreign tourist arrivals.
Speaking on the sidelines of the South Asia Travel & Tourism Exchange (SATTE) at Yashobhoomi Exhibition Centre here, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, CM Omar said, the administration’s approach is centred on sustainable growth, improved visitor experience and long-term value creation.
He emphasised that domestic tourists today are aspirational, spend more and contribute significantly to the local economy. “Our effort is to position Jammu & Kashmir strongly within the Indian market and ensure that visitors return with satisfaction and a desire to revisit,” he said.
Highlighting the broader vision, the Chief Minister said the government is moving away from a volume-driven model to a quality-focused tourism framework. He reiterated plans to develop nine new sustainable, world-class destinations in partnership with the Government of India to diversify offerings and reduce pressure on existing hotspots.
Abdullah also underscored the importance of strengthening infrastructure to enable year-round tourism, stressing enhanced rail connectivity to Srinagar and expansion of airport facilities across the Union Territory.
Expressing confidence that J&K’s participation in SATTE 2026 will translate into increased bookings ahead of the upcoming tourist season, he noted that the travel expo has drawn record global participation, with thousands of exhibitors and brands from over 60 countries showcasing their destinations.
