Srinagar, Apr 17: The Kashmir Traders Manufacturers Federation (KTMF Regd) has expressed shock and grief over the tragic Jhelum boat capsize incident that claimed six lives on Tuesday, with three more people still missing.
Chairman KTMF, Abrar Khan extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families impacted by the devastating accident. The overcrowded boat carrying around 19 passengers, all locals, overturned in the Jhelum river near Gandbal area of Srinagar.
“This unfortunate incident has raised pertinent questions about the safety measures in place, particularly given the recent swelling of the river due to continuous rainfall in Kashmir,” Khan said. He highlighted the lack of adequate safety oversight at the site frequently used by locals for commuting via boats.
In his statement offering condolences, Khan emphasized the need for accountability and the absence of personnel monitoring the riverbank point of accident. The incident has brought to light the urgent requirement for enhanced safety protocols along the Jhelum, especially during periods of heightened water levels.
Furthermore, Khan voiced concerns over the incomplete footbridge project that has been pending for the past decade. “The delay in construction of the footbridge has left locals with limited options for safe river crossing, exacerbating the risks associated with river travel,” he said.
The KTMF has urged authorities to ensure strict enforcement of safety guidelines for all boat operations ferrying tourists and commuters. “Water transport is key for our region, but civilian lives cannot be compromised due to lack of protocols,” Khan stated.
Search and rescue efforts by the SDRF and local police continued on Wednesday to locate the three missing individuals.
