Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (PTI) A special court here on Friday sentenced an Income Tax Department officer to three years of rigorous imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a charitable trust in 2013.
The court hearing cases linked to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) convicted Jarnail B Singh, Income Tax Officer (OSD) in the office of the Joint/Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit) Pratyakashkar Bhavan, and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for three years.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.
The CBI registered the case on February 22, 2013, on allegations that the accused demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 10,000 from the complainant for issuing a certificate under section 11 and 80G of the Income Tax Act, for giving exemption to Shrilekha Vividhlaxi Charitable Trust, an official statement said.
The CBI laid a trap and caught Singh red-handed while accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 10,000 from the complainant. The accused was arrested on February 22, and a chargesheet in the matter was filed by the CBI on October 31, 2013.NATIONALAHMEDABAD
