Jammu, Feb 23: The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court on Monday reserved its order on a petition challenging the detention of Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Malik, who serves as the Jammu and Kashmir unit president of the Aam Aadmi Party, was detained on September 8 last year under the stringent PSA for allegedly disturbing public order and was subsequently lodged in Kathua jail.
On September 24, he filed a habeas corpus petition before the High Court contesting the legality of his detention and seeking compensation of Rs 5 crore.
The matter was heard by Justice Mohammad Yousuf Wani, who reserved the case for pronouncement of orders, Advocate Appu Singh Slathia said. Slathia, who is also the spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party in Jammu and Kashmir, informed that the court has granted both parties — Malik’s legal team as well as the State — one week’s time to submit written synopses or any additional submissions, if they wish to do so.
Describing the case as a long and challenging legal journey, Slathia said the party remains hopeful and confident in the judicial process. She also appealed to Malik’s supporters and party activists to remain calm and positive while awaiting the court’s decision.
