Srinagar, Jan — (The Biz Reporter):
The season’s first major Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir between January 20 and January 25, raising the possibility of widespread snowfall across the Union Territory, according to Kashmir Weather Forecast.

As per current meteorological indications, moderate to heavy snowfall is likely over most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, with around a 70 per cent probability of snowfall even over the plains of the Kashmir Valley during this period.

The higher reaches are expected to bear the brunt of the system, with heavy to very heavy snowfall forecast for popular tourist destinations and upper-altitude areas, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Doodhpathri and Pahalgam. Such intensity of snowfall could significantly impact road connectivity, tourism activities, and daily life in these regions.

Weather experts have further indicated that two to three Western Disturbances are likely to affect the region between January 16 and January 25. However, the most active and intense system is expected between January 20 and 25, which could trigger the season’s first major snowfall spell.

Authorities and residents, especially those in higher reaches, have been advised to remain alert and prepare for possible disruptions, including road closures and power outages. Tourists planning travel to snowbound destinations are urged to follow official advisories and weather updates closely.

More clarity on the intensity and exact distribution of snowfall is expected in the coming days as the system approaches.
