Jammu, Nov 25:
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has confirmed the detection of significant mineral deposits, including copper, titanium, and gold, along with crucial reserves of Lithium, in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).
The landmark revelation was made by Sanjay Lohiya, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Mines, during his inaugural address at the launch and roadshow for the e-auction of limestone mineral blocks in Jammu and Kashmir on November 24, 2025.
Economic Viability Under Assessment
While the deposits have been confirmed, Mr. Lohiya noted that the economic viability and other critical assessments for extracting these minerals are yet to be made.
The potential discovery of Lithium, a vital component in modern battery technology, is particularly significant for India’s push towards electric mobility and renewable energy storage.
The Additional Secretary also highlighted J&K’s substantial existing reserves, stating that the region holds an estimated one billion tonnes of limestone. The government is proceeding with the auction of the first seven blocks of limestone, a step anticipated to significantly change the mining sector and unlock greater potential for employment and revenue generation.
Integrated System to Combat Illegal Mining
In a move aimed at ensuring transparency and combating malpractice, the Union Territory is rolling out the Integrated Mining Surveillance System (IMSS). Additional Chief Secretary, J&K Mining Department, Anil Kumar Singh, reiterated that the introduction of an advanced and fully functional surveillance system by early 2026 will ensure that the entire mining process is made transparent and streamlined.
This pioneering initiative is projected to generate approximately Rs 500 Crore in revenue for J&K. Furthermore, the mining department is currently processing 24 new landform blocks, which are slated to be brought to e-auction by March next year, providing a major boost to the region’s estimated revenue.
The Ministry of Mines has also earmarked and recommended Rs 100 Crore for establishing command and control centres to support this new, integrated monitoring system.
