Srinagar, Dec 19: The Government of India has promoted Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, IAS, Director Sericulture Jammu and Kashmir, to the Selection Grade (Level-13), recognising his administrative competence, leadership qualities and sustained contribution to public service.
The promotion has been widely welcomed by officers and employees of the Sericulture Development Department, silkworm rearers, farmers and other stakeholders across Jammu and Kashmir, who described the decision as a reflection of confidence reposed in his governance abilities and professional integrity.
Since taking over as Director Sericulture, Bhat has played a key role in revitalising the sericulture sector in the Union Territory. Under his leadership, the department has undertaken focused policy interventions aimed at improving productivity and strengthening infrastructure. Initiatives to promote bivoltine silk production, enhance farmer outreach, upgrade skills and improve coordination with the Central Silk Board and allied institutions have yielded tangible results on the ground.
Officials said these measures have helped improve livelihood opportunities for silkworm rearers and contributed to strengthening the rural economy, particularly in traditional sericulture belts of the Valley and Jammu region.
Known for his transparent and inclusive style of functioning, Bhat is regarded as an officer with strong field orientation. His emphasis on accountability, innovation and sustainable development, coupled with regular engagement with farming communities and departmental staff, has earned him wide respect within administrative circles.
Employees of the Sericulture Development Department and sector beneficiaries expressed pride over the promotion, terming it a well-deserved recognition of his efforts. Many said the elevation would further motivate him to introduce lasting reforms and steer the sericulture sector towards greater growth.
The promotion is being seen not only as a personal milestone for Bhat but also as a moment of pride for the Sericulture Department, highlighting the role of committed leadership in driving socio-economic development in Jammu and Kashmir.
