Srinagar, Jan 17: In a significant turn of events, Kashmir has witnessed a notable increase in the Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of handicrafts in the first three quarters of the fiscal year 2023-24.
Official statistics reveal that a total of 21,392 handicraft products received GI designations between April and December 31, 2023, indicating a considerable rise compared to the entire fiscal year of 2022-23, during which 12,904 products were GI tagged, and 6,164 products in the fiscal year 2021-22.
Remarkably, the handicrafts department has broadened its scope beyond GI crafts, with more than 2,000 non-GI crafts receiving labels in the ongoing fiscal year.
Pashmina emerged as the leading GI-tagged product, securing the highest count with 11,290 labels. Following closely were Sozni with 4,840 labels and Carpets with 3,596 labels. Kani Shawl, Paper Machie, Walnut Wood, and Khatamband obtained 286, 577, 797, and six labels, respectively.
Seven major crafts, namely Pashmina, Sozni, Paper-Machie, Walnut Wood Carving, Khatamband, Hand Knotted Carpets, and Kani Shawl, have already obtained GI certification. In addition, the GI registration process for seven more crafts, including Namda, Shikara, Gabba, Willow Bat, Crewel, and Chain Stitch, is currently in progress, with their dossiers submitted to GI authorities in Chennai. The government is actively advocating for GI tags for historically significant crafts such as ‘Kangri’ and ‘Wagguv,’ each with a heritage spanning 300 years.
Equipped with Secure Fusion Authentication Labels (SFAL), the GI tags feature a distinctive eight-digit alphanumeric code. These labels incorporate both overt and covert marks, visible under specific lighting conditions, ensuring the authenticity and purity of handmade shawls. Overt marks, discernible to the naked eye, include a unique and unpredictable eight-digit alphanumeric code. Covert marks consist of nano-tangent particles concealed in the SFAL, visible under infrared light, resulting in a green reflection. Moreover, certain concealed details, such as 100% handmade status and GI registration, become apparent under ultraviolet light.
“This label is exclusively issued to certified users – artisans, manufacturers, or exporters. The notable increase in the issuance of GI labels is indicative of growing awareness,” remarked an official.
The handicrafts department has launched an extensive promotional campaign through both print and digital media, utilizing major airports as platforms to enhance awareness. The escalating public preference for labelled handicrafts is considered a pivotal factor in curbing the proliferation of counterfeit items, according to officials.
