Srinagar, July 16: In a significant boost to Kashmir’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, a group of successful entrepreneurs and industry leaders have joined forces to launch ‘Launchpad Kashmir’, an early-stage startup incubator fund aimed at transforming the entrepreneurial landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
The initiative, spearheaded by Vivek Raina, Co-Founder and CEO of Excitel Broadband, brings together a powerhouse team of seven founders, including Muheet Mehraj of Kashmir Box and executives from Western Digital, Vivirti Capital, FlapKap, and Thndr. Their collective vision is to provide comprehensive support to aspiring entrepreneurs in the region, from ideation to seed funding.
Launchpad Kashmir has set an ambitious goal of funding and incubating 24 startups by the fiscal year 2025, with an average investment ranging from INR 20 to 25 lakhs per startup. The incubator is designed as a sector-agnostic platform, offering entrepreneurs essential resources such as workspace, mentorship, training, and proof-of-concept funding.
Vivek Raina, speaking about the initiative, said, “Kashmir is my home and holds a special place in my heart. We understood that while these entrepreneurs have immense potential for local businesses and solutions, they face significant challenges in training and mentorship on how to take those ideas or solutions to the national and global level.”
The founders identified a critical gap in the region’s startup ecosystem during their interactions with local entrepreneurs. Despite the presence of some incubators set up by educational institutions, there was a pressing need for an initiative led by experienced entrepreneurs who understand the unique challenges of building and scaling businesses.
Muheet Mehraj, Founder of Kashmir Box and a key figure in Launchpad Kashmir, emphasized the initiative’s unique position: “Launchpad is founded by Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs. Our 13+ years of experience in the J&K startup ecosystem has given us deeper insights into the challenges faced by local entrepreneurs, both intellectual and financial.”
The incubator aims to go beyond just providing funds. It seeks to create a close-knit community of startup entrepreneurs, academicians, and industry practitioners, fostering an environment where they can learn from each other, network, and flourish.
Namrata Kaul, another founding member, highlighted the untapped potential she witnessed at the Kashmir Startup Conclave in September 2023. “I was amazed by the diversity of startup ideas being pursued by the youth of the valley and delighted to see many women entrepreneurs too. The only missing piece was exposure and the lack of mentoring,” she stated.
Launchpad Kashmir’s launch comes at a crucial time when the Indian startup ecosystem is expanding beyond metropolitan areas. By focusing on Jammu and Kashmir, the initiative aims to tap into the region’s unique strengths and address local challenges while also preparing startups to compete on national and global stages.
The incubator will not only provide financial support but also facilitate connections between entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and angel investors, helping startups scale their businesses effectively.
As Kashmir’s entrepreneurial ecosystem takes this significant leap forward, Launchpad Kashmir stands poised to play a pivotal role in nurturing local talent, driving innovation, and potentially reshaping the economic landscape of the region. With the backing of experienced industry leaders and a clear vision for growth, this initiative marks a new chapter in Kashmir’s journey towards becoming a vibrant startup hub.
