Srinagar, Apr 1: Batamaloo Traders’ Association President Peer Imtiyaz ul Hassan has strongly opposed the recent reservation policy implemented by the Jammu & Kashmir administration, which significantly reduces the open merit quota to a mere 30%.
Peer Imtiyaz said that the decision to allocate a 10% reservation for Paharis from the general/open merit category casts uncertainty over the dreams and aspirations of students who have dedicated months to pursuing their ambitions based solely on merit.
The approval of a 10% reservation for newly-included tribes, along with the addition of 15 new castes in the OBC category, further exacerbates the already precarious situation for open merit candidates. While the government claims the move aims to empower marginalized communities, it regrettably neglects the fundamental principle of fairness and equal opportunity.
President Peer Imtiyaz ul Hassan underscores the urgent need to reevaluate this policy, advocating for a system that prioritizes meritocracy over political expediency.
He emphasizes that the current reservation policies not only hinder the prospects of deserving candidates but also perpetuate a cycle of injustice and inequality.
Moreover, the President echoes the sentiments expressed by individuals within the open merit category, who rightly question the justification for reducing their share of opportunities in government jobs and educational institutions. Such politically motivated policies only serve to deepen the disillusionment and frustration among open merit candidates. In conclusion, President Peer Imtiyaz ul Hassan urges the government to uphold the principles of fairness and meritocracy, ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their backgrounds, have an equal opportunity to pursue their aspirations and contribute to society’s progress.
