Adil Nazir
Baramulla, March 5 (KNT):

Authorities in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have directed street vendors to immediately stop using artificial colours and chemical additives in the preparation of the popular local snack Aalu Manj, warning of strict legal action against violators.

Officials said the directive was issued following multiple complaints from residents who alleged that some vendors were adding synthetic colours and chemical substances to enhance the appearance and taste of the snack. The use of such additives, they said, could pose serious risks to public health.

Tehsildar Sopore Sheikh Tariq confirmed that instructions had been formally communicated to vendors selling the snack in local markets.

“Complaints have been received regarding the use of colours in the fries. All vendors are hereby warned to stop these unhealthy practices immediately,” Tariq said.

He emphasized that vendors must ensure food sold to the public is clean, hygienic and free from harmful additives.

“Only hygienic food should be sold. Anyone found violating these orders will face legal consequences,” the Tehsildar added.

Aalu Manj, a deep-fried gram-flour fritter snack, is widely sold by roadside vendors across Sopore and other parts of north Kashmir. The snack is particularly popular among school students and shoppers due to its affordability and quick availability.

Officials said the administration has taken serious note of increasing concerns over food adulteration, especially the alleged use of industrial food colours that may not be approved for human consumption.

The local administration has also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any cases of food adulteration to the authorities.

Meanwhile, officials said surprise inspection drives will be conducted in the coming days to ensure compliance with the directive and to verify that vendors follow proper food safety standards.

Authorities warned that vendors found violating the instructions could face penalties under food safety regulations. [KNT]
