Srinagar, Aug 17:The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) has strongly opposed the recent changes to the Srinagar Airport parking policy, citing increased costs and inconvenience for tourists, travelers, and locals.
In a recent communication, KCCI addressed the Airport Authority of India (AAI) regarding the newly implemented vehicle entry and parking system at Srinagar Airport.
The chamber reminded the AAI Director of their meeting on August 5, 2024, where they discussed arbitrary charges and issues faced by both commercial and private vehicles.Following this, KCCI met with the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir on August 6, 2024, seeking intervention.
The Commissioner assured support in resolving the controversy. While KCCI believed that the issue of multiple entry and parking charges had been partially addressed, with promises to resolve remaining concerns after Independence Day celebrations, the situation has reportedly worsened.
Key points of contention:
1. Numerous complaints received about unjustified charges
2. Demand for immediate removal of the newly installed toll post
3. Long wait times and traffic jams causing inconvenience to tourists
4. Potential impact on commercial transport services beyond Gate No. 15. Concerns about Kashmir’s reputation as a tourist destinationKCCI argues that the new policy is discriminatory and undesirable, stating that such a system doesn’t exist elsewhere in India or globally. The chamber calls for a “One Nation One Policy” approach, demanding the withdrawal of the new policy and reinstatement of the previous system. The organization warns that failure to address these concerns may lead to the new charges being labeled as a “Kashmir Entry Cess.” KCCI remains hopeful for a swift resolution to the issue.
