New Delhi, Jan 1 – In a groundbreaking move for Indian aviation, Air India has officially launched in-flight Wi-Fi services on its domestic routes, making it the first Indian airline to provide internet connectivity for passengers flying within the country. This significant upgrade, announced on January 1, 2025, applies to flights operated by the airline’s Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft.
This development comes in the wake of Vistara’s earlier achievement, where it became the first Indian airline to offer Wi-Fi on international flights last July. Following Vistara’s merger into Air India in November 2024, the integration of such digital advancements is set to enhance the overall travel experience for Air India’s customers.
Air India’s introduction of Wi-Fi is accompanied by a commitment to improving connectivity for travelers, stating that it allows passengers to browse the internet, access social media, catch up on work, or connect with friends and family while soaring through the skies. The airline’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, Rajesh Dogra, emphasized the importance of connectivity in modern travel. “Whether for work or leisure, we are confident that our guests will appreciate connecting to the web and enjoying the new Air India experience on board these aircraft,” said Dogra.
As part of the rollout, passengers will have complimentary access to Wi-Fi during an introductory period. The service is designed to permit multiple device connections simultaneously once the aircraft reaches an altitude of 10,000 feet, adhering to regulations set by the Department of Telecom which mandates that internet usage is permitted only above this height.
The expansion of Wi-Fi connectivity on Air India flights marks a significant step forward in enhancing customer engagement and satisfaction, aligning the airline with global standards in air travel. Following the initial launch in domestic flights, there are plans for further implementation across the airline’s entire fleet, which currently stands at approximately 300 aircraft, including newly acquired models under a substantial order of 570 planes from Airbus and Boeing in recent years.
With this initiative, Air India is not just adapting to modern demands but positioning itself advantageously against competitors in the rapidly evolving aviation landscape. As the airline gears up to bolster its operations and service offerings, analysts speculate on its potential to enhance profitability and customer loyalty in the forthcoming years.
