Srinagar, Dec 25 (KNC): National Conference Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday reiterated his unwavering support for students amid the ongoing reservation row, urging the government to immediately engage with them and clearly explain the measures and decisions taken to resolve the issue.
In a post on X, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC), Aga Ruhullah said he has neither forgotten the students nor abandoned them, stressing that transparent communication from the government is crucial at this stage.
He warned that if the government fails to initiate talks and apprise students of concrete steps by Saturday, he would personally join them in protest. “I will not leave our youth and students helpless. I will walk with them and sit with them this coming Sunday at the same place where we gathered last year on December 23, to ensure their voices are heard,” he wrote.
The NC MP’s remarks come amid simmering student unrest over the reservation policy.
Earlier this month, the Omar Abdullah-led government approved a new reservation framework, reportedly aimed at correcting what is widely perceived as an imbalanced quota system. However, the details of the policy have not been made public yet.
The government has sent the proposal to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for approval, but the lack of clarity has kept students and several organisations on edge. Many groups have warned of protests if the changes are found to be inadequate or merely cosmetic.
After assuming office, the Omar Abdullah government had constituted a Cabinet sub-committee to bring fairness to the reservation policy. Following months of deliberations, the file was forwarded to the LG’s office, even as uncertainty continues over its final contours. (KNC)
