Ganderbal, December 23: In a significant development underscoring the deepening reach of drug abuse across social and educational strata, Ganderbal Police on Tuesday apprehended two alleged drug peddlers, including a well-educated MBA student, and recovered a heroin-like substance from their possession.
The arrests were made during a routine naka checking operation conducted by a police party of Police Station Kheerbhawani at Central University, Tullamulla Road, within the jurisdiction of Ganderbal.
Acting on the directions of Senior Superintendent of Police Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal (JKPS), the police intercepted a Maruti-800 vehicle bearing registration number JK01U-3866. Upon thorough checking of the vehicle, two persons — Showkat Ahmad Bhat, son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat, and Sameer Ahmad Bhat, an MBA student and son of Mohammad Muzaffar Bhat — both residents of Batwina, Ganderbal, were apprehended.
During the search, the police recovered a contraband heroin-like substance from their possession, which was seized on the spot following due legal procedure.
Subsequently, a case FIR No. 41/2025 under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Police Station Kheerbhawani. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the recovered contraband and to identify the broader distribution network involved.
Police officials said the involvement of a postgraduate management student highlights the alarming spread of narcotics among educated youth, cutting across conventional socio-economic boundaries.
Ganderbal Police reiterated their firm resolve to eliminate the drug menace from society and appealed to the public to cooperate by sharing any information related to drug trafficking, assuring confidentiality and prompt action.
