Beijing, Dec 31: After repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that Washington helped avert a war between India and Pakistan, China has now asserted that it too played a mediating role during the recent military standoff between the two South Asian neighbours.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Symposium on the International Situation and China’s Foreign Relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing had intervened diplomatically in multiple global flashpoints, including tensions between India and Pakistan.
In a statement shared by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on X, Wang said, “To build peace that lasts, we have taken an objective and just stance and focused on addressing both symptoms and root causes. Following this Chinese approach to settling hotspot issues, we mediated in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, the tensions between Pakistan and India, the issues between Palestine and Israel, and the recent conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.”
China’s claim comes months after India and Pakistan were locked in a brief but intense military confrontation in May this year. The escalation followed a terror attack in the Pahalgam valley on April 22, in which 26 civilians were killed.
In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
India has consistently rejected assertions of any third-party mediation, maintaining that the four-day confrontation was de-escalated through direct military-to-military communication between New Delhi and Islamabad.
New Delhi has long held that issues with Pakistan are bilateral in nature and does not accept external involvement in resolving them.
